WHAT:

La Brea Tar Pits is unveiling a brand-new Insider Tour for visitors looking to get the VIP experience at the legendary Pleistocene site.

As a backstage pass to the Ice Age, these tours will transport visitors 50,000 years back in time, offering exclusive access to experiences that are typically limited to La Brea Tar Pits scientists. Visitors will get a chance to explore the only active excavation site in the world, located in the middle of a city—a place where dire wolves and saber-toothed cats hunted giant sloths and Columbian mammoths—and then meet the Ice Age researchers making discoveries daily.

Along the way, participants will come face-to-face with the museum’s iconic Columbian mammoth sculptures while learning about the famous Lake Pit, a behind-the-fence tour of one of the oldest tar pits still in existence, a chance to get up close with the world-famous bubbling tar, an opportunity to study real micro fossils from at least 10,000 years ago alongside actual scientists, hands-on experience with actual fossils and more.

The new La Brea Tar Pits Insider Tour will also provide visitors with a greater understanding of the century-long excavation process and cutting-edge research going on to this day at the site, which was recently selected as one of the first 100 geological heritage sites by the International Union of Geological Sciences.
