The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) in Exposition Park is proud to present L.A. on Wheels Day this coming Saturday, November 22.
The on-site celebration of the year-long Being L.A. initiative will feature many of the names and faces included in the series of online stories focusing on the diverse communities of Los Angeles through the lens of wheels.
NHM will host car and bike shows (featuring groups such as Great Autos Car Club, Lady Lowriders, Califor
nia Lowrider Alliance, Redrum Motorcycle Club and Sikk Skooters), live skate demos from pro skaters as well as Rowdy the Skate Dog, LA Derby Dolls and LA Skate Hunnies and several exhibitors (including Biking While Black, CicLAvia, Impala Skate, the Wanderwell Society, Mattel and Velo Bikeshop) for the day. Other activities will include hands-on art from organizations like Give Kids Art, storytelling sessions from Drag Arts Lab and the Skateside and wheel-themed Museum Educator and taxidermy presentations.
In the Commons Theatre, three discussions will take place over the course of the day, culminating in a keynote comedy presentation from retro pop culture comedian, Charles Phoenix. The panels will include a screening and discussion of Biking While Black (featuring biking advocate Yolanda Davis-Overstreet, CicLAvia’s Romel Pascual, Velo’s Hrach Gevrikyan and LA DOT’s Clare Eberle, moderated by Dr. Peter Chesney), one on LA’s skate culture (featuring pro skateboarder Salman Agah, Paralympian Kanya Sesser, photographer Mike Ballard and Vans historian Catherine Acosta, moderated by Edgar Chamorro) and another on “DIY & Drive” (featuring Hot Wheels designer Charlie Angulo, Derby Dolls’ Elsie “Evil E” Duff, Lady Lowriders’ Sandy Avila and Great Autos’ Peter Griffith, also moderated by Dr. Chesney).
The afternoon will conclude with a 3pm comedy slide show performance from the acclaimed Charles Phoenix, “Southern California in the 50s & 60s.” With his unbridled enthusiasm, keen expertise, and eagle-eye for oddball detail, the comedian lavishes spirited commentary on colorful, vintage sights and scenes of mid-century SoCal’s space-age suburbia, car culture, unique architecture, unsung attractions, legendary landmarks, glamorous Hollywood, world-famous theme parks and more. This presentation is not included with the price of Museum admission, with separate tickets available on NHM’s website.
