Based on the graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder by Roye Okupe, Iyanu is an animated series that tells the story of a girl named Iyanu. Steeped in Nigerian Culture and mythology, the show follows a girl named Iyanu in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland. She learns to have a normal life, yet she is stuck studying the ancient arts and history of Yorubaland. While she is living her day-to-day life, a looming threat begins to arise as divine power not seen since the Age of Wonders begins to awaken. Iyanu sets off on a journey with her newfound friends Biyi, Toye, and a magical leopard named Ekun to uncover the source of evil lurking in Yorubaland as she unlocks her destiny along the way.

Iyanu tells a beautiful story of a girl who is trying to find answers to her origins. The show masterfully shows the culture of Nigeria through its beautiful music and eye-popping colors. Iyanu masterfully gives us a peek into Nigerian Mythology, introducing us to mythology stories that are not well known. The animation is smooth and easy to follow while showing very impressive action scenes. One of the things I like about this show is how some of the characters grow and discover their self-worth. The show is very diverse and does not shy away from the representation of Nigerian culture. Another aspect of the show I loved was the female representation. It showed strong female characters and presented their capabilities to the audience.

Since its highly anticipated debut on April 5, 2025, on Cartoon Network (followed by its April 6 premiere on Max), Iyanu has captivated audiences as one of the first kids’ animated series to center Nigerian culture, history, and mythology. The show boasts an all‑African voice cast—including Adesua Etomi‑Wellington—and a theme song sung by Grammy‑winning Afropop artist Yemi Alade. Backed by Lion Forge Animation and YouNeek, Iyanu offers both entertainment and cultural pride, inspiring empathy, resilience, and identity exploration in its young viewers.

With its masterful storytelling, Iyanu is worth the watch.

Don’t miss the adventure—tune in this April to see Iyanu: Child of Wonder bring rich Nigerian mythology, vibrant animation, and empowering storytelling to life on Cartoon Network and Max. Celebrate diverse heroes—watch now!
