WHAT:
There’s a lot of talk about representation on screen. As much as Hollywood strives for diversity and inclusion initiatives, the needle hasn’t moved much. Luckily, there are some creatives behind the scenes challenging the status quo. These trailblazers are not just advocating for change, they are creating it. The Latina Superheroes Behind the Scenes panel features the following executives and talent as part of the Hollywood Latino community; all available for media interviews (after the panel):
- Lindsey Morgan (CW’s “The 100” and “Walker,”) brings strength and depth to each character she portrays. Her presence is crucial, as it brings much-needed positive Latinx representation to mainstream media, empowering audiences and paving the way for future generations.
- Emmy-nominated EP and creator Cuban American Gloria Calderón Kellett (Amazon’s with Love,” Netflix’s “One Day at a Time”) has transformed the landscape of television with her heartfelt and humorous portrayals of Latina family life. Her work offers a complete turn from the negative stereotypes that Latinas have historically been portrayed as in the media.
- Former Sony Screen Gems executive and powerhouse Chicana producer Jolene Rodriguez, who executive produced “The Absence of Eden” starring Zoe Saldana and produced “Atypical Pirate” with Julio Macias, is the CEO of Broken English Productions. Rodriguez’s exceptional work has earned her recognition as one of Variety’s 10 Producers to Watch. With her keen eye for talent and unwavering passion for storytelling, Rodriguez stands as a formidable force in the industry, driving change and championing underrepresented voices. In addition, Rodriguez has created a new initiative, sponsored by Women in Film, with the goal of showcasing and empowering the talents of three women filmmakers through the production of their short films.
- Esteemed Mexican director Patricia Riggen, recognized for her impactful films like “Under the Same Moon” and “The 33,” stands out in the industry for her ability to authentically depict the human experience and shed light on the diverse narratives of Latina women. Riggen’s work not only resonates with audiences globally but also serves as a testament to the importance of representation and storytelling in cinema. Her dedication to showcasing the strength and resilience of marginalized voices continues to inspire and empower filmmakers and viewers alike.
- Leading the comics forefront, Kayden Phoenix is the Chicana visionary behind the first Latina superhero team in comic book history, “A LA BRAVA.” Phoenix is a trailblazer, showcasing Latina power from various heritages with every stroke of her pen. Phoenix’s latest work, “Lipstick Cliqa”, a three-part series about a Chicana vampire gang, was slated by Sony Music Entertainment.
- Leading the discussion is the acclaimed media personality Liz Hernandez from 94.7 The Wave, who single-handedly hosts a show that has soared to the number one spot in LA radio. The remarkable efforts of the women on this panel are not only reshaping the entertainment landscape but also breaking barriers and advocating for greater inclusion, and these Latina superheroes are leading the charge.
